28th February 2018
The Chairman,
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
DEMAND FOR UPDATE OF THE INVESTIGATION OF PROFESSOR USMAN YUSUF
The Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC) is a coalition of over One Hundred and Fifty anti-corruption organizations, whose primary aim is to constructively combat corruption vigorously and to ensure the effective monitoring of the various Anti-graft agencies in its activities in the fight against corruption and to contribute towards the enthronement of transparency, accountability, probity and total commitment in the fight to eradicate corruption in Nigeria.
In line with the aforementioned subject, we show concern for the indictment of the reinstated Executive Secretary in that investigation activities were carried out by your commission following the suspected case of misappropriation of funds, fraud and abuse of office during the office tenure of the above mentioned person which was between July 2016 to July 2017.
The Commission in fulfillment of its mandate, obtained information from the National Health Insurance Scheme office via a letter written to the Acting Executive Secretary of NHIS dated the 21st of December, 2017 with reference number: 3000/EFCC/ABJ/CTGI.2/VOL15/237 requesting for all the necessary documents and evidence of payments made during the period of Professor Yusuf as the Executive Secretary of the Scheme. These we believe have all been retrieved from the Scheme for proper investigation.
CSNAC wishes to express our interest in the mater and will appreciate an update on the progress made on the subject matter. The reinstatement of Professor Usman Yusuf has raised credibility and integrity questions for the current government to answer. It was the expectation of Nigerians, as it is the practice under the Civil Service, that a public officer remains suspended pending the period of investigation. Especially when such officer has been indicted by an administrative panel. This was the case with the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal and the immediate past Director General of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Oke.
It is in response to the circumstances surrounding the reinstatement of the suspended Executive Secretary that we wish to express our interest in the outcomes of your investigation and will appreciate update from your commission on the matter.
We wish to thank you in anticipation of your favourable response to our request.
Thank You.
Yours Sincerely,
Olanrewaju Suraju
(Chairman)
